Frequently Asked Questions

1. Where can one find prescribed measure ratios and colours of the Slovenian flag and coat of arms?

A very detailed description of the Slovenian flag and coat of arms as well as regulations on their proper use can be found in the law on the flag, coat of arms and national anthem (available in Slovene - Zakon o zastavi, grbu in himni, Ur.l. RS, št. 67/1994, št. 14/1999 Odl.US: U-l-296/94).

2. Is it always necessary to play the EU anthem after the Slovenian anthem?

No - more details can be found in the directive on using the flag and anthem of the EU in the Republic of Slovenia (available in Slovene - Uredba o uporabi zastave in himne Evropske unije v Republiki Sloveniji, Ur.l. RS, št. 38/2004).

3. What does R.S.V.P. stand for?

This abbreviation of French origin (Répondez s'il vous plaît) can be translated into "Please, respond." Usually, it can be found in the bottom right corner of an invitation and implies that one should confirm or cancel his/her attendance.

4. In what order should flags be hung out?

The flag of the Republic of Slovenia is to be hung on the honorary place, for instance: if the flag of the Republic of Slovenia is to be hung next to some other flag, it must always be on the left side (viewed en face). The flag of the European Union can be hung only together with the flag of the Republic of Slovenia and in accordance with the rules above. The Slovenian flag can however be hung out on the right side (viewed en face) only when in company of a flag of a foreign country or international organisation during an official visit by the head of the foreign state or of the high representative of the international organisation. More details are available in the law on the flag, coat of arms and national anthem (available in Slovene - Zakon o zastavi, grbu in himni, Ur.l. RS, št. 67/1994, št. 14/1999 Odl.US: U-l-296/94) and in the directive on using the flag and anthem of the EU in the Republic of Slovenia (available in Slovene - Uredba o uporabi zastave in himne Evropske unije v Republiki Sloveniji, Ur.l. RS, št. 38/2004).

5. How does one properly hang out the Slovenian flag?

When hung on a pole, the order of (from top down) the flag's colours must be: white, blue, red. The coat-of-arms must be (viewed en face) in the upper left corner of the flag. The only proper way is to hang the flag out with its shorter side attached to the pole, and not the longer one.

6. Should one hang out the black flag when mourning?

No, one should lower the existing flags to half mast.
